Nestled into the sides of mountains, these often-snowy homes are also ideal for the ski-enthusiast, or simply someone wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life. Originating in Europe’s Alpine region, these wooden residences predominantly feature heavy, gently-sloping rooves and wide, angular eaves showcased in the front of the structure. Time and cultural developments around skiing and hiking have transformed these one-time seasonal farm buildings into sought after landing pads during prime recreational periods in some of the world’s most sought after destinations.

Come Sail Away | The Yachting Lifestyle

Come-Sail-Away

For sailors, life coalesces around all things wet and blue. It is a world of freedom, challenges and discoveries. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of leaning into the wind, whether it’s for a race or for the distant shores of a quiet anchorage.

AustraliaPrice Upon Request | Whitsundays, Queensland, Australia | Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty

Sailing is a passion, a lifestyle and a community, where people can’t wait to set sail and are equally excited about returning home to a league of the like-minded. Camaraderie runs deep, even if no two sailors can ever agree on elements that make up a perfect boating town. Is it an escapist destination without a single traffic light in the Caribbean or South Pacific? Or a lively cosmopolitan port on the California coast? Ocean, lake, bay or river? The list of candidates for the world’s great yachting spots is a fluid one, arguably determined as much for their land-based amenities as the conditions of the wind, waves and weather.

Florida$26,950,000 USD | Miami Beach, Florida | ONE Sotheby’s International Realty

Top waterfront communities excel at offering residents a vacation way of life on both land sea often that includes golf, tennis, dining and cultural events. One luxury yacht-centric development even has its own private airport and medical center.

Spain25.000.000 € | Mallorca, Spain | Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, draws international crowd, and with it second-home buyers, for its strategic location, mega-yacht accommodations and myriad of boating-related services. “And, obviously, one of the most important factors is the Mediterranean weather,” says Amalia Losada of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty. “All these reasons make Mallorca a very attractive destination.” Boaters also know the island as an important stop on the global yachting circuit owing to the Copa del Rey, an annual regatta in which more than 130 teams representing two dozen nations compete for honors in the waters of the Bay of Palma de Mallorca.

SVG$67,500,000 XCD | Saint Vincent and the Grenadines | Saint Vincent & the Grenadines Sotheby’s International Realty

Losada says the profile of sailing devotees is not a simple one. “There are risk takers and sun-and-sea enthusiasts.” And, fortunately, there are boating communities world-wide to accommodate any and all of them.

Art & Home | Thoroughly Modern Mid-Century

Art_Home_2017_Issue_6

From the October 2017 edition of Art & Home
, Iyna Bort Caruso shows us that mid-century modern architecture isn’t just having its moment. It’s having an extended renaissance.

“It’s as if the mechanism that refreshes cultural trends every few years has developed a glitch,” wrote The New York Times.

The modernist style began in the late 1930s and took hold after World War II as new materials and building techniques became available that allowed architects to break with the past. Decades on, mid-century modern continues to feel fresh. And not just because TV’s “Mad Men” glamorized the style. It’s because the clean lines, open floor plans and expansive windows that characterize the style emphasize the “modern” rather than the “mid-century.”

Price Upon Request | San Rafael, California | Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty

Carib Daniel Martin, an architect and self-described “modernist at heart,” renovated the mid-century modern house in the Washington, DC
, suburb of Kensington, Maryland, that serves as both his home and office.

He says he’s attracted to the simplicity, the airiness and the way mid-century modern homes “nicely straddle two worlds. They have a modernist feel but are still connected to the more traditional idea of what a home is, which is why people feel comfortable in them.”

$1,900,000 USD | Amagansett, New York | Sotheby’s International Realty – East Hampton Brokerage

Martin and his architect-wife, Gabriela Leniz, have worked on many renovation and expansion projects of mid-century modern homes. He says clients tend to be evenly split between those attracted by style alone and those who appreciate its historical context.

On the other side of the country, influential mid-century modern architects and builders left legacies in California, particularly in Palm Springs
and the San Francisco Bay Area
. Michael Dreyfus of Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty in Palo Alto
, California
, says, “We are fortunate to have an inventory of homes built in the 1950s by developer Joseph Eichler, the pioneer who brought mid-century modern to the masses.” Buyers like the efficiency. “The homes were able to deliver so much in less space. You can get three and four bedrooms in a very small footprint,” he says.

$5,950,000 USD | New Canaan, Connecticut | William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty

More recently, Dreyfus has noticed the trend of mid-century modern elements being incorporated into new construction. “There’s something about the style that’s captured people’s imaginations today,” Dreyfus says. “Younger buyers in Silicon Valley
are more design-oriented, and mid-century modern really plays into the social fabric.”

imagereader.aspx-2
$5,450,00 USD | Denver, Colorado | LIV Sotheby’s International Realty

The love affair with mid-century modern is inescapable. Architectural walking tours sell out, museum exhibits trumpet its culture-shaping impact and events like Modernism Week, an 11-day festival in Palm Springs, routinely draws tens of thousands of devotees to the land of William Krisel, Richard Neutra and Donald Wexler. “Mad Men” may have inspired an obsession, but the resurgence of midcentury modern continues on, powered of its own accord.

Affiliates of Sotheby’s International Realty® Brand Pledge Funds for Over 150 Homes to New Story

carousel_newstory

Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC and New Story, the brand’s charitable partner and a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, announced today that the Sotheby’s International Realty® global network of affiliated companies and sales associates have pledged to donate funds for the construction of over 150 homes in an upcoming New Story community in Mexico.

DSC_1040

At the 2017 Sotheby’s International Realty Global Networking Event held in Las Vegas, Brett Hagler, CEO and co-founder of New Story, gave a moving presentation of the New Story mission to build communities of homes for those in need for $6,500 USD per home. Brett challenged the global audience of approximately 2,400 attendees to reach a goal of 100 home pledges during the two-day meeting. In the 32 hours that followed Hagler’s on-stage appearance, the goal was surpassed with over 150 homes pledged. Once fully-funded, these homes will provide a safe, sustainable living environment and unlock the potential for families to thrive.

How it Works:

Sotheby’s International Realty affiliated companies and sales associates made individual pledges to raise funds to cover the $6,500 USD cost of a sustainable home for a family in need. Once the pledges are funded:

  • 100% of all donations raised through Sotheby’s International Realty affiliated companies and sales associates will be directly applied by New Story to hiring local workers and buying local materials for the construction of homes in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
  • New Story’s operational costs are covered separately by a group of private donors called, The Builders, so all donations go straight to the field.
  • New Story works with local partners in-country to help identify families who have the greatest need.
  • Once families move in, New Story surveys the community over time to measure the exact impact a safe home has on the families’ lives.

Minoterie (15 of 24)

“A safe home provides the foundation for health, education and opportunity. When I met Brett Hagler and the New Story team, I felt inspired by their mission to build sustainable homes for those in need. Teaming up with New Story as a charitable partner allowed us to extend the services we provide daily: to help people discover homes that allow them to live their best life. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the Sotheby’s International Realty network in support of this mission.”

– Philip White, president and chief executive officer, Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC

new story haiti -609

“This was an extraordinary outpouring of generosity. We had ambitious expectations, but the Sotheby’s International Realty network went above and beyond. My favorite part was seeing how genuinely excited people were to give and join New Story’s mission. I know this is just the beginning of a brand partnership that together, will eventually change thousands of lives.”
