Art & Home | Thoroughly Modern Mid-Century

Art_Home_2017_Issue_6

From the October 2017 edition of Art & Home
, Iyna Bort Caruso shows us that mid-century modern architecture isn’t just having its moment. It’s having an extended renaissance.

“It’s as if the mechanism that refreshes cultural trends every few years has developed a glitch,” wrote The New York Times.

The modernist style began in the late 1930s and took hold after World War II as new materials and building techniques became available that allowed architects to break with the past. Decades on, mid-century modern continues to feel fresh. And not just because TV’s “Mad Men” glamorized the style. It’s because the clean lines, open floor plans and expansive windows that characterize the style emphasize the “modern” rather than the “mid-century.”

Carib Daniel Martin, an architect and self-described “modernist at heart,” renovated the mid-century modern house in the Washington, DC
, suburb of Kensington, Maryland, that serves as both his home and office.

He says he’s attracted to the simplicity, the airiness and the way mid-century modern homes “nicely straddle two worlds. They have a modernist feel but are still connected to the more traditional idea of what a home is, which is why people feel comfortable in them.”

Martin and his architect-wife, Gabriela Leniz, have worked on many renovation and expansion projects of mid-century modern homes. He says clients tend to be evenly split between those attracted by style alone and those who appreciate its historical context.

On the other side of the country, influential mid-century modern architects and builders left legacies in California, particularly in Palm Springs
and the San Francisco Bay Area
. Michael Dreyfus of Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty in Palo Alto
, California
, says, “We are fortunate to have an inventory of homes built in the 1950s by developer Joseph Eichler, the pioneer who brought mid-century modern to the masses.” Buyers like the efficiency. “The homes were able to deliver so much in less space. You can get three and four bedrooms in a very small footprint,” he says.

More recently, Dreyfus has noticed the trend of mid-century modern elements being incorporated into new construction. “There’s something about the style that’s captured people’s imaginations today,” Dreyfus says. “Younger buyers in Silicon Valley
are more design-oriented, and mid-century modern really plays into the social fabric.”

The love affair with mid-century modern is inescapable. Architectural walking tours sell out, museum exhibits trumpet its culture-shaping impact and events like Modernism Week, an 11-day festival in Palm Springs, routinely draws tens of thousands of devotees to the land of William Krisel, Richard Neutra and Donald Wexler. “Mad Men” may have inspired an obsession, but the resurgence of midcentury modern continues on, powered of its own accord.

Affiliates of Sotheby’s International Realty® Brand Pledge Funds for Over 150 Homes to New Story

carousel_newstory

Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC and New Story, the brand’s charitable partner and a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, announced today that the Sotheby’s International Realty® global network of affiliated companies and sales associates have pledged to donate funds for the construction of over 150 homes in an upcoming New Story community in Mexico.

DSC_1040

At the 2017 Sotheby’s International Realty Global Networking Event held in Las Vegas, Brett Hagler, CEO and co-founder of New Story, gave a moving presentation of the New Story mission to build communities of homes for those in need for $6,500 USD per home. Brett challenged the global audience of approximately 2,400 attendees to reach a goal of 100 home pledges during the two-day meeting. In the 32 hours that followed Hagler’s on-stage appearance, the goal was surpassed with over 150 homes pledged. Once fully-funded, these homes will provide a safe, sustainable living environment and unlock the potential for families to thrive.

How it Works:

Sotheby’s International Realty affiliated companies and sales associates made individual pledges to raise funds to cover the $6,500 USD cost of a sustainable home for a family in need. Once the pledges are funded:

  • 100% of all donations raised through Sotheby’s International Realty affiliated companies and sales associates will be directly applied by New Story to hiring local workers and buying local materials for the construction of homes in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
  • New Story’s operational costs are covered separately by a group of private donors called, The Builders, so all donations go straight to the field.
  • New Story works with local partners in-country to help identify families who have the greatest need.
  • Once families move in, New Story surveys the community over time to measure the exact impact a safe home has on the families’ lives.

“A safe home provides the foundation for health, education and opportunity. When I met Brett Hagler and the New Story team, I felt inspired by their mission to build sustainable homes for those in need. Teaming up with New Story as a charitable partner allowed us to extend the services we provide daily: to help people discover homes that allow them to live their best life. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the Sotheby’s International Realty network in support of this mission.”

– Philip White, president and chief executive officer, Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC

“This was an extraordinary outpouring of generosity. We had ambitious expectations, but the Sotheby’s International Realty network went above and beyond. My favorite part was seeing how genuinely excited people were to give and join New Story’s mission. I know this is just the beginning of a brand partnership that together, will eventually change thousands of lives.”

“I’ve always been attracted to transformation,” designer Osman Yousefzada says casually. “When something breathes… you build an emotive relationship with it.”

It’s been a few months since Osman journeyed to Brazil to interact with a striking home and find inspiration for his 2018 line. The dress from the end of the video played a starring role, and it is something special to Osman. “There is just this sort of ease to the dress. You know?” says Osman. “You’re still the belle of the ball or a cool thing on the red carpet, but it’s easy. It’s confident.”

Coming off of a return trip from Paris, the London-based designer took a moment and reflected on his time with us in Brazil shooting LIVE | Fashion. “You know, it’s like not really fashion,” he clarifies. “We’re all craftsmen; I make dresses from materials and textures. I find patterns and look to mosaics. Whether it’s a home or dress, we see better versions of ourselves when we come into contact with these things.”

When the dress is made available later this year, its production will remain special. Each dress will be a one-of-a-kind piece, with each one featuring colorful, hand-sewn beading. Osman’s original piece from the video was raffled off at the Sotheby’s International Realty® Global Networking Event last month to support New Story, a non-profit organization building homes for families in need. All of the proceeds went directly to helping build a community in Mexico.

Art & Home | Speaking Volumes

SEC 0_17_09 Life_Cover_Art&Home_B copy

From the September 2017 edition of Art & Home, Iyna Bort Caruso shows us that a library can be a true reflection of your best self.

Walk into a personal library and you enter a realm, not just a room. No other space offers as much insight into a homeowner’s preferences, style and intellectual curiosity. They can feel intimate and consequential.

Rhode Island$2,500,000 USD | Newport, Rhode Island | Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty

In Newport, Rhode Island, the centerpiece of one sprawling condominium is a massive library with vaulted cedar-shingled ceilings, cherry and mahogany millwork and an imposing fireplace. Although it looks authentic to the home, the library was a meticulous 21st century reimagining by its current owners out of a space where coachmen once met. The condo, joined together from three units, is in a former carriage house built in 1852 that was once part of an estate owned by John Jacob Astor. Kate Kirby Greenman of Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty in Newport calls the library “remarkable.”

Utah$5,900,000 USD | Salt Lake City, Utah | Summit Sotheby’s International Realty

The 30 by 30-foot room, accessed by stairs or elevator, also has an adjoining butler’s pantry and wet bar which makes it ideal for entertaining as well as for quiet contemplation, notes Greenman. “People enter the library and are just awestruck,” she says. “It’s very peaceful, very beautiful and it just takes your breath away.”

Florida$165,000,000 USD | Manalapan, Florida | Sotheby’s International Realty – Palm Beach Brokerage

In a digital world, the idea of a space given over to actual hard-covered books might seem anachronistic if it wasn’t still so alluring. Even die-hard texters, tweeters and e-reader enthusiasts easily get swept up in rooms dedicated to stories, history and ideas. But without question libraries have evolved. Today, they’re a backdrop for entertainment and a showcase for art and design.

Arizona$16,950,000 USD | Paradise Valley, Arizona | Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty

“I love the way you can manipulate space with books,” says architect Susan Bower of Mitchell Wall Architect and Design in St. Louis, Missouri. Line a room with books and they can give the impression of wallpaper. Build freestanding bookcases and they become sculptural pieces. “They lend a presence and a depth to any room,” Bower says. “In a library, you have all these ideas captured between bindings. It’s just a wonderful repository of human thought.”
