4 Ways CES 2015 is Transforming Your Home

The concept of the ‘Networked Home’ has swiftly progressed from science-fiction to mainstream, and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada has become the new spot for the inauguration of these revolutionary home ideas.

Here are 4 of the most radical notions that will change the way you interact with your home.

Soon It’ll Cook Itself…

Kitchen Innovations - Whirlpool® Interactive Kitchen of the Future 2.0

Smart appliances continue to get a big push at CES, with some notable 2015 updates including GE’s full range of interconnected dryers, washers, ovens and even water heaters and Whirlpool’s concept for a sustainable home ecosystem.

Beosound Moment

One of Microsoft’s most impressive modern demos is PixelSense – a massive touchscreen surface with a multi-touch interface that, due to the scale, gives the impression of controlling life-size items within a digital space.

This year, touch no longer requires the ‘screen’.

Any surface can now be a control panel, as longtime audiophile & design icon Bang & Olufsen demonstrated with their BeoSound Moment smart music controller. The B&G Moment uses a gorgeous oak panel to allow you to control the music throughout your home, essentially dissolving into the existing surface elements of the home.

Lucy, I’m home!

Netatmo Welcome camera

With the recent Nest (a Google company) acquisition of Dropcam, personal home security cameras have become the new hot items of 2014. For 2015, companies are looking to step up the innovation by adding more tracking elements for a more customized experience.

Netatmo introduced the Welcome camera, which has a sleek and unassuming anodized aluminum exterior coupled with facial recognition technology, which allows the device to notify an owner when specific people are visible by the camera. So if a mom wants to make sure Jason is home to finish his schoolwork by 4:00 as he promised he would, Netatmo makes that possible.

Look Ma – No Hands!

Logbar Ring

Logbar Inc.

Perhaps the largest takeaway from CES this year has been that the whole “using your hands” thing is SO last century.

Gesture-based control is being rapidly developed on multiple fronts, with the Logbar ring taking the cake this year. A wearable input device that sits unassumingly on the user’s index finger and using simple hand and finger movements will control appliances, send texts and even snap a photo. Plus, it can vibrate as a notification. Cue archetypal Tolkien reference.

Energous Corporation

Finally, in a product that would make Tesla roll over and shout “I told you so!”, wireless charging with a range within a whole room is soon to be a reality. Essentially working like Wi-Fi for power, Energous’ WattUp can power up to 12 devices all within a 30 square-foot range of the transmitter, all by using traditional radio frequency spectrums, which are even less permeating than a cell phone signal.

Great Scott, indeed.
